Hello!

I thought a lot about the words I could add to this image and I decided that the best thing to do was to quote  John Farnham’s song “You’re the voice”:

We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear,

This time, we know we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing we can make it better

And this is a link to the song (a song that I adore and that I listen  when I feel weak and fearful and then I feel powerful again).

I decided that I cannot sit and do nothing (or let fear conquer me), so I reacted in the only way I know: by making art (jewelry).

I started from this image and tried to make a cane.

I conditioned white and black polymer clay.

Then I made a square of about 6 cm with a height of about 3 cm.

I sketched the pattern (free hand) on the  square.

I started to cut following the lines and to add stripes of black clay. (I made a rectangle from black polymer clay with the same height as the white square and I cut stripes from it).

I removed some of the black clay (that was above the circle line).

I continued to add black stripes following the sketched lines.

I started to reduce the cane (I attach a very good video tutorial by the PolymerClayTutor on how to reduce a square cane so that you will understand the cane reducing process).

I cut a smaller part of the base (a 3 cm high cane) and then I made the circle around (I did not make a circle in the first cane because I was afraid it would distort too much during the cane reduction).

It looked like I needed to add more white polymer clay to the sides (so I did that).

I wrapped the circular section in black polymer clay and then I put the pieces of the cane together (pressing gently).

I added some more white polymer clay to the bottom of the design.

I used this cane to make the beads for the earrings and the pendant. I put slices of the cane on a  sheet of white polymer clay, then rolled them with the roller and I then cut square beads using a square cutter. I curved them a little bit on the sides (using my fingers). After baking them in the oven (according to the manufacturer’s specifications – in my case for 40 min at 110 degrees Celsius), I sanded them with sanding papers (200 – 400 – 600 -800 – 1000 – 1500 – 1800 – 2000 – 2300 – 25000), in water and polished them with a denim cloth . No need to add varnish, I liked the smooth look of the beads.

Thank you!

Mihaela
