Faux Etched Fused Glass [Polymer clay Tutorial]

Hello dear polymer clay enthusiasts!

Now that I know that there is a way to use nail art transfer foils with polymer clay, it’s a Pandora box that has opened so I’m eager to explore the possibilities.

This type of metallic holographic foils are great to achieve a faux glass effect and for today’s tutorial I have chosen an etched fused glass effect.

 

 

 

 

In fused glass making, the etching part is made using a dremel. We are going to achieve a faux etched effect using silkscreens (you can use stencils as well) and black acrylic paint.

I started by properly conditioning the clay. Then I put two sheets of polymer clay (conditioned on the second thickest setting) one on top of the other. I used the cover of a cosmetic bottle to make an impression into the clay and then I used these guidelines to cut the shape of the bead.

I used wire and the round nose pliers to make an attaching “system”.

 

 

I followed the same steps to make the second bead (I used a different bottle cover).

I’ve baked the pieces for 30 minutes at the temperature recommended by the polymer clay manufacturer (you can bake them for 30 minutes if you’re using Cernit or for 45 minutes if you’re using a different brand of clay).

Then I applied a coat of black acrylic metallic paint (this is going to help when we are going to apply the foils using Weldbond adhesive).

Then I used Weldbond adhesive to glue the foils.

 

I used a silkscreen and black acrylic paint to make a pattern on top of the foils.

I used alcohol ink markers and Pinata ink to color the pattern impressed onto the larger bead.

I used black acrylic paint to draw a black margin.

I finished by applying a medium coat of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze.
